Valentine's Day: The Beat Goes On

Yeah! We’re half-way through February and the days are longer and nights shorter. I am grateful for the milder temperatures but the rain is worse than snow considering the ice that has formed over, not only my road and driveway, but the dirt roads leading to the paved, a mile in either direction. Throw in steep hills and voila, a disaster in the making if I travel over 10 miles an hour, in 4-wheel drive and “snow” mode. It is a lesson in patience and consciousness of what is underneath my tires at all times. I turn off the radio and pay attention to how and where my car is moving.

Which is like riding a horse. Being aware of what is under your butt and focusing on 1200 pounds of potentially explosive power at any moment. This is the ultimate practice of concentration. I’m amazed that after most rides I’ve learned another lesson about being “one” with my equine partner. He will listen if I give the right cues, and if I don’t, oh well, my fault. Horses don’t do it “on their own.” Neither do dogs. They need direction, sometimes more focused than others. I can’t imagine not riding. Being away for a few days and I feel “off” physically and mentally. And, I don’t foresee always having a pup or two in my life. Maddie and Sophie are mostly by my side snoozing, especially when I’m in my office writing, cozied up in their comfy beds. They are not fans of the cold and I have to tempt them with promises of treats to leave the warmth of the house.

Remember your valentine on Friday! St. Valentine lived in Rome during the rule of Emperor Claudius. Claudius wanted to have the largest army in the world and thought that by making marriage unlawful he’d get more young men to join-up. Fr. Valentine secretly married couples until he was caught and sentenced to death. While in prison he was befriended by the guard’s daughter who spent many hours visiting with him. On the day of his death, February 14, 269 AD, he wrote her a note thanking her and signed it Love Valentine. He is the patron Saint of Love. Over a billion cards are sent every year with teachers receiving the most. It is also one of the biggest days for eating out. I was always working but now can relax and do a casual meal at home. Here are some easy and delicious recipes that can be made ahead of time—make in the next day or so and have a romantic evening in on Friday vs. fighting the crowds. Light a fire, open a nice bottle of wine, put on some quiet music and enjoy!

My recent book signing at Acorn Farm was a great success. It was fun to see old friends and make some new ones. I was especially excited to have many young women interested in the book, some who expressed their fear of making mistakes or not being able to follow a recipe. I assured them that the recipes are easy and fast with no crazy ingredients or equipment needed. I asked each of them to please let me know as they “Cooked Forward.” I can’t wait to hear their success stories.

Until the next time…

I wish you Many Million Dollar Days!
