Fall Preparations

What an incredible couple of weeks we’ve had with sunshine and cool temperatures. Galant and I have some fun and energetic rides. His winter coat is growing in, so a lightweight blanket will be put on soon. The barn is warm with all the “horse heat” now, but a couple of weeks down the road that will change. Not only will our horse partners get heavier clothing, so will we. Maddie and Sophie are doing great too. Both are 14 and being “low body” pups are dragging in lots of leaves after perusing the yard. A coyote was spotted a few weeks ago, the first in years on my property, and the red-tail hawks and owls are always on the prowl for their next meal. So, I’m the “watchdog” 100% when they are out. I wonder why I have so many chipmunks with all the predators? Maybe they are too fast?

The garden is pretty much prepared for the winter. I’ve left one fountain on because I love listening to it while outside and the fall crocus have wakened from their warm weather naps. They are delicate and their beauty short-lived as a hard frost will take them out. Leaves will be addressed in the next week or so. Dominic, my all-around maintenance helper, is an animal at attacking the layers and layers that accumulate almost overnight. It is an insurmountable task for his team.

I continue to do a fair number of cooking demonstrations, and they’ve been nicely attended and well received. Birmingham library had 75 patrons registered and Royal Oak close to that amount. It is an interesting mind-set for me having to prepare portions of the recipes beforehand, setting up at least an hour ahead and the being intensely “on” but, it is so fun and keeps me sharp.

Mom is still moving along, albeit slowly, at 97, pushing 98. I take dinner on Wednesdays to her and most often my sister Liz joins us. Josephine spends Saturdays with her and her caregiver Mary Lou is there with her therapy dog Bear at least 5 days for a few hours. The care she receives at her assisted living is very good but for peace of heart we like to have one of us or Mary Lou there for “eyes on.”

On Friday November 6th I’ll be at an incredible fundraiser for Five Points of Hope Cancer Care Fund. I am so glad to be involved with this wonderful cause. All proceeds are distributed as grants to diagnosed cancer patients in need of financial support for medical or personal needs. The silent auction is a definite WOW and with dozens of neat vendors your Holiday Shopping can be done in one shot. Light appetizers are complimentary, cash bar, gaming and a 50/50 drawing. Come for a fun, reasonable ($10 admission fee) and stop by to say hi to me at Baker’s of Milford.

Signing off… enjoy the s’mores recipe if you can’t do the fire…

WE WISH YOU MANY MILLION DOLLAR DAYS!!!
XXOO,
MARY, MADDIE, SOPHIA and GALANT
